A First-Week Routine for a New Golden Retriever Puppy

Your first week together is a chance to learn how your puppy eats, rests, explores, and asks for help. Keep the household plan simple enough that you can follow it and adjust with professional guidance.
Begin with the information you receive
Keep the current food, feeding schedule, veterinary records, and care guidance together. Ask LiveOak about the puppy’s recent routine before homecoming. Discuss diet changes, portions, growth, and body condition with your veterinarian.
Make room for sleep and supervision
Choose predictable places for rest and supervised activity. Let family members know when the puppy needs quiet. Add new rooms and experiences at a pace the puppy can manage, rather than giving access to the whole house at once.
Arrange supervision and toilet opportunities around the puppy’s needs. Keep household expectations consistent. If you need help with toilet training or settling, choose a qualified trainer who uses reward-based methods.
Start learning in small steps
Reward behaviors you want to encourage, such as checking in with you or approaching a resting space. Keep handling and training manageable. The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior recommends reward-based training.
Ask your veterinarian which socialization opportunities fit your puppy’s health, vaccination history, and local exposure risk. Talk with a trainer about controlled introductions to people, sounds, surfaces, and other animals.
Attend the initial veterinary visit
Take the available records and a question list. LiveOak’s Health Guarantee requires a licensed veterinary examination within three business days after you take possession. Provide LiveOak with the examination record within three business days after the appointment.
Ask the clinic to set preventive care, feeding, growth monitoring, and activity guidance for the individual puppy. Read the complete guarantee for its coverage and requirements; general education does not change those terms.
Keep notes and ask for help
Write down the food offered, appointments, questions, and any changes you want to discuss with the veterinarian. Save the clinic’s emergency contact instructions. Seek veterinary help for a health concern rather than trying to diagnose it from a routine article.
Contact LiveOak when you have a records or program question. We welcome family updates and questions as circumstances change.
